What is Disability Sport?
A disability sport and classification awareness package.
What is Disability Sport? is stage two of a four-stage program being developed by the Australian Sports Commission as part of Project CONNECT – a national initiative to help more people with a disability become involved in sport from the local community playing field to the Paralympics.
CONNECT stands for “Creating Opportunities Nationally through Networks in Education, Classification and Training”.
What is Disability Sport? focuses on how sport, that is only for people with a disability, is organised and conducted and aims to increase understanding of the process of classification within disability sport.
The comprehensive workbook and CD-ROM is a self-paced learning package and is divided into four units of work covering:
- An introduction to disability sport
- The basis of modern classification systems
- The history of disability sport and classification
- Communication skills
The material is highly interactive containing over 100 video clips filmed especially for the resource, as well as interviews with athletes, classifiers and coaches.
On successful completion of the What is Disability Sport? package participants are invited to join the Australian Sports Commission’s Disability Sport Network as a Disability Sport Contact Officer. A Disability Sport Contact Officer provides direction and opportunities for people who want to get involved in disability sport. Completion of the package is also an important step in the process of becoming a classifier.
Multilocus is now working with the Australian Sports Commission’s Disability Sport Unit to develop Stage Three of the Australian Sports Commission’s Classifier Education Program - a series of sports specific classifier training packages.
