GeoInsight Resource Kit Launch - 28 March, 2003

EMERGENCY MANAGERS GET AUSTRALIAN FIRST SPATIAL INFORMATION RESOURCE

A spatial information resource to make emergency managers more aware of the benefits of geospatial technologies in managing disasters was launched by Mr Gary Nairn MP in Canberra on Friday 28 March 2003. More than 80 guests and media attended.

The completion of the GeoInsight Resource Kit, which is being sent to 3000 emergency services personnel and geospatial businesses, comes as the ACT Region recovers from its worst recorded bushfires.

“ It is estimated that up to 80% of the information that fire fighters and others need in an emergency has a geographic element and is therefore spatial in nature”, said GeoInsight Project Director, Mr Nik Fominas. “Australian companies with GIS and other spatial technologies can provide a complete range of spatial products and capability to help emergency managers analyse risk, respond to and recover from bushfires, floods, cyclones and other natural disasters”.

It is conservatively estimated that the additional demand stimulated by GeoInsight for spatial information products and services in the emergency management community could rise by about 50% over the next 3 years – equivalent to an additional $60 million per year.

Technik Pty Ltd, a Canberra-based special projects facilitation company, developed the GeoInsight Resource Kit following discussions, seminars and briefings to emergency management and spatial industry organisations over the past 18 months. The multimedia kit features six best practice case studies, seminar and workshop material and the recently completed Future Directions in Digital Spatial Information for Emergency Management report.

“ The GeoInsight Project is an Australian first”, said Mr Fominas. “The Resource Kit shows emergency managers how geographic information systems can help them in disaster situations and there is also an Industry Information CD to help spatial information companies understand business opportunities in Australia’s emergency management sector”.

Manager of the Risk Management Unit with the ACT Emergency Services Bureau, Mr Rick McRae said the material presented in the GeoInsight Resource Kit is essential for those managing emergencies in today’s complex world. “We benefited greatly from using many of the ideas during the recent catastrophic Canberra bushfires, “ said Mr McRae.

Mr Fominas praised Multilocus Pty Ltd, a Canberra based multiple media company, for an outstanding job in developing an attractive and comprehensive resource for emergency managers and geospatial specialists.

“ ...... Due to the magnitude of the task, the production of the resources was an element of the project to which we had to give a great deal of attention……..the overall value of this element was about half a million dollars……..we had concerns about the ability of any one company to undertake the task……….. After much research and deliberation we decided to let the work to a single Canberra based company. That company was Multilocus Interactive………I really have to praise and congratulate Multilocus Pty Ltd for their excellent work.

Multilocus fulfilled the challenging brief admirably, producing what is truly a world class job. We are very proud of the product and I believe that Multilocus can be justifiably proud of what they have achieved.”
